Meyer Sound SIM3 vs Rational Acoustics SMAART7   2 comments

This week i finally got the chance to do a small comparison between SIM3 and SMAART7 . I work a lot with both programs so knowing differences between them might be handy for me .

THIS IS NOT A LAB TEST SO THERE IS NO FINAL CONCLUSION REGARDING WHICH OF THE 2 IS BETTER . JUST USE THE SYSTEM THAT SUITS YOU BEST OR IS WITHIN YOUR BUDGET .

Did i find differences ?

Yes i did need to give SIM3 a different coherence threshold value compared to SMAART 7. Also when i started the measurement SMAART 7 synchronized at 4.9ms while SIM3 synchronized at 4.88ms . I chanced the timing of SMAART 7 to 4.88ms . Why don’t know but when i changed the mic position to get a bit more distance both analyzers synchronized at the same time .

The loudspeaker cabinet is a new product being worked on down here in the Netherlands .

I call it the “little boy” because it’s the little brother of another product which I also did a bit of measuring on ("BIG BOY") . Thanxs to the guy’s from United Tecknowledgy and Vision Acoustics .

So here are the screen shots of both analyzers .

SMAART7 onax start end result vs ofax roughly at the –6db point at 26° ofax to the right so the 52° coverage is as specified as far as i could see at the time of the measurement . Because i had to do 3 more measurements on new products i had to move on ……..

  1. Be aware of two issues: Microphone vs Microphone measurements (mic compare, mic eq) are inaccurate in the presence of noise – noise in one channel can influence the displayed transfer function and is not eliminated the way it is in normal SIM mode. This is a design error. Also the mode commonly called “1/3 octave” is actually labelled “Band Spectrum” on the screen, which is a more honest description of its function.
