Creating Mayhem part 2   2 comments

In the post Creating Mayhem i wanted to test if all computers running Smaart V8 would be able to find the delay time accurately with all sources running.

At the start of the blog post i mentioned all the speaker models where matched to the respons of the RM28ac so this was the target speaker.

So here’s the RM28ac’s respons

RM28AC SOLO NEARFIELD

And all speaker models running on the manufacturer preset in this set-up.

I also tried to get everything to match with the RM25ac but that would mean more latency on all since that beast starts at +/- 24-28Hz. I decided to match all to the RM28ac so i had to implement a 2nd order all-pass filter way down low on the RM25ac and by doing so pushing the RM25ac’s phase response to the RM28ac (way down low: 35Hz Q:0.7).

After that i had to program a Custom FIR file for the BSS BLU160 to get the FA28ac to match with the RM28ac. The 2 models match from +/- 500Hz but the different high-pass filter frequencies  would cause a dip when running a coherent source somewhere around 60-80Hz.

Here’s the response of the RM28ac and the FA28ac running on the factory preset.

The RM28ac vs the FA28ac factory preset + Custom FIR for matching the phase response in the low end. The extra latency on the FA28ac is about 5 to 6ms but i lost the FIR designer file and the measurements on the FA28ac’s start and end where not done on the same day/mic position (sorry for that i’m a mess when it comes to saving stuff).

After the FA28ac was matched to the RM28ac the RX699 needed some adjustment to also match the RM28ac.

So all phase responses are matched to the RM28ac (which was what i intended to do).

Eq’ing the set-up took a while since i never tuned a set-up using multiple computers for the sync noise thing from Smaart V8 (as shown in the blog post before this 1). Have to say it was kinda hard but in the end the result sounded in my opinion very good…..

In the final video you see the response without the eq set to the X-curve and with the eq set to the x-curve. The only thing i can’t show is what happens if the sub inputs from the Marantz AV thing are playing along so it looks like there’s not enough low end but trust me: there is (i’m kind of a bass-head). If you do not believe me you’re welcome to come over to listen to this little surround set-up…..

Enjoy and stay safe
