End Fired array (a little follow up on the CSA post a week ago)   1 comment

So here’s a little follow up on the CSA post from a week ago. This time it’s a End Fired Array and a End Fired Special.

First a “text book End Fired Array” (so only 4 subs used). I’ll use the Mapp on Line program from Meyer Sound for doing some predictions.

I’ll use 10 mic’s within Mapp so 5 at the back of the array and 5 in front of it. Mic 1 and 6 will be 2 meters away from the nearest sub; mic 2 and 7 will be 4 meters away from the nearest sub; mic 3 and 8 will be 8 meters away from the nearest sub and so on (mic4&9 at 16mt mic5&10 at 32mt).001 End fired 4 subs strt

So here are the levels on mic1 to 5 at the back of the array of Sub1 solo.001B end fired sub1 solo all mic's at the back SPL level

So here are the levels on mic6 to 10 at the front of the array of Sub3 solo.001C end fired sub4 solo all mic's front SPL level

And now lets compare a few levels between different mic’s and solo vs. all on levels.

The main advantage with a End Fired Array with 4 subs is no rise in level between the Sub1 solo vs. the full array at the back of the array and no change in sound on axis at the front (with the CSA array with 2 subs no level offset in the post before you could see the back sub changing the frequency response at the front of the array due to a phase offset in the upper range of the array).

The biggest disadvantage is the footprint of this array: it takes a lot of space Bedroefde emoticon

Watch out and don’t let those pretty blue areas fool you. At 32mt at the back of this array out of 4 900LFC’s you still get a 84dB overall level so check the production permit regarding maximum levels.

Again watch out and don’t let those pretty blue areas fool you. At 32mt at the back of this array out of 7 900LFC’s you still get a 88dB overall level (90 or a bit more if i look at the 25 to 40ish Hz area) so check the production permit regarding maximum levels and take appropriate action if needed.
